February 24 - A Plot of Earth
I’m the underpants gnome of prepping.

You have a plot of land and have the financial resources to do what you please. What’s the plan?

End-of-the-world compound. Duh. I’m not going to make an amusement park for crying out loud.

Although this prompt alerts me to my complete and utter lack of knowledge when it comes to properly outfitting a doomsday compound. I’m coming to terms with how little I know about prepping despite my prepare instincts; I’m the underpants gnome of prepping.

Phase 1: Plot of land and unlimited resources

Phase 2: ???

Phase 3: End of the world compound.

I’m not exactly sure what creating the perfect, ideal compound would fully entail—there are preppers out there much more well-versed in how to organize this place and know exactly what you need to stock, how, and where. How to rotate the crops and store the food. How to make the place defensible. How to store ammo and exactly what kind of artillery you would need. I need these people who know this information. Is there a prepper concierge? That’s what I’m talkin’ about.

My first thoughts are water source, food sources, shelter, sanitation, firepower, manpower, medical clinic. There need to be a few doctors and builders and fixers of things. I’d need seeds—but what kinds? How do I arrange the garden?

Power seems like a luxury but not impossible. Honestly all I can think of is the show The Last of Us and the preppers in Episode 3 and how hard I was laughing when the dude rolled out in a wheelchair like 23 years into the dystopia and Jeren said, “Damn. Now that’s prepping.”

Factory Settings: MONEY!

This week on #FactorySettings @justjeren and I talk about the elephant in the room. MONEY! We talk about when we first became aware of it, how it affected our parents' divorces, how much we spent on our addiction, being dependent, financial insecurity and so much more!

Unedited Check-In 144

Hello new followers, I hope I don’t disappoint you. I want this place to feel like home, where we can escape the Thunderdome and process the world. Where we can post dog pics and recipes and book recommendations. Where we support each other as we get sober, lose weight, embark on new business opportunities, creative endeavors, relationships and travels. I want this to be your oasis of sanity and laughter in an increasingly mad world. A creative outlet where you can share your spirit with us.

We might not have any control over the news cycle—but we can control our habits and attitude. It all starts with us. And hopefully a little piece of that will start here.

Good Morning! ☀️

March 29 - Competetion
At some point, I saw red—and I completely snapped. I lost my mind.

What activity, task, or game most brings out your competitive streak?

This writing prompt immediately brings to mind one summer in the late 1980s when I nearly murdered my cousin.

March 28 - Look Outside
Always leave a place better than you found it.

Go to the nearest window. Look out for a full minute. Write about what you saw.

Hummingbirds play. Squirrels and birds and bees go about their business. Hope comes outside to investigate and disrupts the squirrel eating a fallen orange from the orange tree. All the critters scramble and Hope meanders back inside after doing her business in the yard and sniffing around.

The orange tree is blossoming and also bearing fruit. The kumquat tree is exploding with tasty sweet tart citrus bursts from all the rain. More coming tomorrow. You can feel it in the air. The hummingbirds reappear.

The grass is green, I’m glad I made the effort and put in the investment to grow it. Always leave a place better than you found it. I’m burning this view into my brain, viewing it differently, the way you view something when you know it will soon be a memory.
