January 7 - Write About Writing
This prompt is meta. I dig it.
January 07, 2023

Write about why you want to write.

I don’t want to write. It’s a necessity. It’s something that comes almost as naturally as breathing and it feels almost almost as imperative to my survival. I have to write in order to stay sane. This has proven to be true many times in my life--whether it's when I'm coming down off meth or longs days in rehab or late nights worrying my baby was okay in utero.

I just wrote and wrote and wrote, hoping it would save me. Maybe it did. Maybe it didn’t. It’s never really mattered. If nothing else, when I’m writing it means I am not trapped alone in my own mind. When I’m not writing, I know that I’m in trouble. If I’m avoiding my journal it usually means I’m avoiding facing some truth about my life. When I’m avoiding the computer it means I’m afraid to express my opinions or tell my story or any story.

This daily random practice of Write Club is good for me if for no other reason, it exercises that muscle and allows me to sleep well at night. When I put my head on my pillow, I have the sense that I spent at least a portion of the day devoted to what I have often felt was my whole purpose for being here on this rock in space.

There’s some kind of wisdom in my fingers that my brain doesn’t posses and I don’t have access to that wisdom until I sit down and start writing or typing. Writing is a kind of excavation for me. I’m searching for uncomfortable truths, hoping to uncover the parts of myself I’ve buried. Hoping to find those memories lost in pockets of synapses that I disconnected from long ago. I know they’re there, somewhere.

This prompt is meta. I dig it.

Factory Settings: MONEY!

This week on #FactorySettings @justjeren and I talk about the elephant in the room. MONEY! We talk about when we first became aware of it, how it affected our parents' divorces, how much we spent on our addiction, being dependent, financial insecurity and so much more!

Unedited Check-In 144

Hello new followers, I hope I don’t disappoint you. I want this place to feel like home, where we can escape the Thunderdome and process the world. Where we can post dog pics and recipes and book recommendations. Where we support each other as we get sober, lose weight, embark on new business opportunities, creative endeavors, relationships and travels. I want this to be your oasis of sanity and laughter in an increasingly mad world. A creative outlet where you can share your spirit with us.

We might not have any control over the news cycle—but we can control our habits and attitude. It all starts with us. And hopefully a little piece of that will start here.

Good Morning! ☀️

At some point, I saw red—and I completely snapped. I lost my mind.

What activity, task, or game most brings out your competitive streak?

This writing prompt immediately brings to mind one summer in the late 1980s when I nearly murdered my cousin.

March 28 - Look Outside
Always leave a place better than you found it.

Go to the nearest window. Look out for a full minute. Write about what you saw.

Hummingbirds play. Squirrels and birds and bees go about their business. Hope comes outside to investigate and disrupts the squirrel eating a fallen orange from the orange tree. All the critters scramble and Hope meanders back inside after doing her business in the yard and sniffing around.

The orange tree is blossoming and also bearing fruit. The kumquat tree is exploding with tasty sweet tart citrus bursts from all the rain. More coming tomorrow. You can feel it in the air. The hummingbirds reappear.

The grass is green, I’m glad I made the effort and put in the investment to grow it. Always leave a place better than you found it. I’m burning this view into my brain, viewing it differently, the way you view something when you know it will soon be a memory.
